Scientific activity directions
Its own scientific activity the RI provides within priority direction “Protection of environment (nature) and sustainable development” under the SSTP “Bioresources: sustainable use, conservation, enlargement”. The work of scientists of the RI of Forestry and Decorative Horticulture is directed towards fundamental and applied investigation of actual issues of forest science, decorative gardening and environment protection, increase of productivity of forest ecosystem and zonal forest-agricultural landscape optimization. Taking into account the diversity of scientific researches, to coordinate science works and to direct the science potential to solve the important issues, all investigations are divided into two scientific projects (fig. 1).

The RI has got a high-qualified scientific and educational staff that including 16 Doctors of science. Large part of scientific investigation performers are full members (Prof. M. Gordienko, Prof. A. Strochynskyy, Prof. A. Tsylyuryk, Prof. O. Kalinichenko, Prof. M. Onyskiv, Prof. A. Goychuk, Prof. O. Pylypenko, Prof. P. Lakyda) and honorary members (Prof. V. Maurer, Sn.Lect. V. Portnoy, V. Begeba, Sn.Lect. V. Svyrydenko, Sn.Lect. O. Babych, Sn.Lect. V. Karpenko, Direc-tor of Boyarka Forestry Research Station V. Rybak) of Forestry Academy of Science of Ukarine. Members of International Academy of Informatization are Prof. P. Lakyda and Sn.Lect. P. Kravets, honorary members of UAAS are Professors A. Strochynskyy and A. Tsylyuryk.
Within RI of Forestry and Decorative Horticulture 5 main scientific schools are presented: forest typology school of Acad. P. Pogrebnyak, Prof. B. Logginov, Prof. V. Bodrov, Prof. I. Zyma, Ukrainian forest inventory school of Prof. K. Nikitin.
Cost of scientific investigation works, provided by thematic plan 2003, equals 605,6 thousand UAH, including 513,6 thousand UAH of budget financing.
As a result of researches conducted in 2003 the scientists of RI have issued 8 monographs, 2 textbooks, 2 brochures, 78 scientific articles, including 1 international, 35 conference abstracts etc.
In order to provide the educational process 19 methodical developments have been prepared by scientific-educational stuff of the RI.
Significant attention was paid to inventor activity during the year. 3 applications for invetions have been submitted. 10 patents for inventions have been got in 2003.
To apply the scientific results into production and implement the educational activity, a prgram of scientific-consulting support for forestry has been developed.
During year 2003 the RI took an active pert in preparation and participation in The Third Global Conference of Global Consortium of Higher Education and Research for Agriculture.
Besides, the staff of RI participated in other conferences and seminars, including international ones. About 60 scientists participated in 40 conferences, where they gave presentations, participated in discussions and decision-making.
The results of completed scientific investigations have been applied in 4 scientific and production recommendations; 24 elaborations have been implemented into practice on different levels of forest resources management.
It is propriate to mention some improvement of organization level and effectiveness of scientific work of the students. In 2003 the student of RI published 4 scientific articles as co-authors.
Collaboration
Scientific and educational activity of RI scientists of has recognition both in Ukraine and abroad. The Evidence of this is close cooperation with many higher educational and research institutions, successful work of scientists in creation and development of Forestry Academy of Sci-ence of Ukraine, participation in joint scientific projects, expert councils and commissions, scientific councils of NAS of Ukraine, specialized scientific councils and Committee for State Prizes of Ukraine in Science and Engineering.
Staff potential of RI allowed to open specialized scientific council Ä 26.004.09 in National Agricultural University that provides the defense of doctoral dissertations for specialties:
- 06.03.01 – forest plantation and phytomelioration;
- 06.03.02 – forest inventory and forest measurements;
- 06.03.03 – forestry and horticulture.
The RI maintains close relations with scientific investigation institutes of Ukraine, with all educational institutes of forest directions, with many scientific establishments in Russia, Byelorussia, and Lithuania. Such cooperation relates to the scientific research coordination, joint projects, and forestry elaborations.
International scientific collaboration
International scientific cooperation exists with following Universities:
- Iowa State University (USA) – implementing distant methods for research of forest ecosystem nature and improvement of forest inventory system, forest-agricultural landscape optimization.
- Humboldt University of Berlin (Germany) – modern informational technologies for decorative gardening object design, joint international seminars and conferences of landscape architecture and gardening.
- Gettingen University (Germany) – environment forestry, joint research projects.
- International Institute for Applied System Analysis (Austria) – modeling of forest productivity, forest certification and standards, forest harvesting, environmental forestry, young scientists training.
- Ukrainian-Sweden project “Strategic plan of development of forest sector of Ukraine” – developed with initiative and promotion of State Committee of Forestry of Ukraine.
- Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry (Czech Republic) – modern technologies of forest resources inventory, science base for aforestation and reforestation.
- Warsaw Higher School of Ecology and Management – modern informational technology of design of decorative gardening, joint research projects of new decorative tree forms and species.
