The existence of Forestry Faculty begins from Forestry Faculty of Novooleksandriysky Institute of Agriculture and Forestry that was opened in 1840. After the beginning of World War I the Institute was evacuated in Kharkiv and in 1921 it was restored as Kharkiv Agricultural Institute with Forestry faculty.
In 1930 on the basis of Forestry faculty of Kharkiv Agricultural Institute and Forestry and Engineering Faculty of Kyiv Agricultural Institute that existed from 1922, the Ukrainian Forestry and Technical Institute was created. It situated in the present educational building ¹1 of NAUU.
Countingent of students and a group of scientists were transfered from Kharkiv to Kyiv in new higher educational institution. The laborator equipment, library, collections, herbariums were handed to Kyiv. The newly created institute had four Faculties: Forestry, Forest engineering, Mechanical technology of wood, Forestry chemical. In five years it was reorganized and renamed in Kyiv Forestry Institute.
Such famous scientists in different times worked at the Faculty: Academicians G. M. Vysotsky, P.S. Pogrebnyak, Professors V.V.Dokuchaev, E.P.Votchal, M.M.Orlov, Y.V.Roll, T.D.Strahov, V.Y.Gursky, A.I.Kolesnikov, O.G.Marchenko, I.O.Yahontov, V.M.Andreev, M.G.Myhailov, I.M.Zhytov, V.E.Shmidt, D.I.Tovstolis, Z.S.Golov’yanenko.
In 1956 Forestry Faculty entered to the structure of the newly established Ukrainian Agricultural Academy. Prof. E. V. Alekseev was the first dean of the faculty. Later the faculty was headed by Prof. I. M. Zyma, K.E. Nikitin, A. I. Kotov, V. I. Gysev, Assoc. Prof. G.V. Dubinin, V. S. Nakonechny, V. M. Portnoy, Prof. A.A. Strochynsky, V. M. Maurer (from 1998 till 2003).
Educational process
Nowadays 50 high qualitative scientists and lecturers work at the Faculty. Among them are 12 Professors, 35 Associate Prof., PhDs.
Training of the specialists carries out by three specialties: “Forestry”, “Hunting”, “Technology of wood processing”. The specialty “Forestry” includes five specializations: “Forestry”, "Forest melioration", “Forest protection”, “Natural and reserve business”, "Forest resources management and entrepreneurship”. New specializations are going to be opened in the fields of ecology and economy.
Nowadays more than 670 full time students and 450 correspondent students study at the Faculty. The main part of them are from the family, members of which work in forest field, more than 220 students study due to the contract with enterprises of forestry.
According to the educational and professional level of education the graduates receive the qualification of young engineer/engineer/engineer-researcher in forestry or park gardening. By specialty “Technology of wood processing” Bachelor degree “Technologist of wood processing”.
Special scientific board for defending of doctor’s dissertations on the main scientific forestry specialties 06.03.01. “Forest plants and phyto melioration”, 06.03.02 “Forest management and forest taxation”, 06.03.03 “Dendrology and forestry” functions at the Faculty.
During 50 last years more than 9500 specialists of forestry were prepared, 263 PhD and 44 doctor dissertations were defended.
Lecturers and scientists of the Faculty prepared 35 text-books and manuals, published 86 monographies.
Collaboration
Forestry Faculty has strong relations with educational institutions from Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in the relevant fields Ukrainian State Forestry Engineering University, Moskaw Forest University, Belorussia Engineering Institute, Lithuanian Agricultural Academy, Forestry Engineering Universities of Bryanks, Voronezh, Ekaterynburg, Forestry Engineering Academy in Saint Petersburg and others.
Recently the international relations with higher educational institutions in forestry field of Poland, Slovakia, Chech repurblic, Germany, the USA, Austria were made more active. For example, syllabus and curriculum for training of Bachelors, Specialists and Masters in Forestry were developed and agreed with the Forestry Department of Iowa University (USA).
